Jail and Law Enforcement Center Project

Learn about the project, history, current conditions, and community efforts that have driven the Latah County Jail and Law Enforcement Center Project.

Overview

The Latah County Jail, located in the Latah County Courthouse basement at 522 S Adams St, Moscow, ID 83843, has served the community for many years, but the outdated building no longer works well for today’s needs and has critical life-safety issues. The layout, building systems, and safety conditions make it harder for the County to safely house inmates, support staff, and meet modern jail standards.

In 2025, Latah County decided to close the jail after inspections revealed significant fire, electrical, plumbing, and life-safety risks. As of October 1, 2025, the facility is used only for short-term holding, and no inmates are housed overnight. The County is committed to transparency as it evaluates options for meeting its legal obligation to provide safe, constitutional jail services. This webpage provides an overview of the current situation, what led to the closure, a link to a video tour, and FAQs. Additional information, including project plans and taxpayer impacts, will be added as it becomes available.
